During the morning of June 30th, 2017, 3 passengers boarded the Transantiago I-10 bus at the start of the route. When the bus arrived at the intersection of 5th of April avenue and Yelcho in the district of Villa Francia, one of the passengers approached the driver and pointed a revolver at him and told him to stop. On the street, encapuchados (hooded ones) blocked the bus and told the driver to get out.

The driver later said to the press and the police: “I was nervous, I stopped…they told me to stop at 5th of April avenue. When the doors were opened the 3 other passengers got off the bus, one of them had a shotgun and a drum of gasoline. They then proceeded to set the bus on fire.”

Finally both the driver and the remaining passengers were forced to get off the bus, unharmed, while the Transantiago bus was completely torched by the encapuchados who then scattered leaflets at the scene.

The encapuchados then left the scene quickly. Police, special forces and even a helicopter soon arrived but were unable to capture any of the anonymous incendiary attackers.

The action took place a few days before the primary elections, where it was decided which candidates are going on to the final elections.

Text of the leaflets that were left at the scene:

“DO NOT BE FOOLED, THE BEST CHOICE IS NOT TO VOTE! ORGANIZE RAGE AGAINST THE CAPITALIST SYSTEM, JUNE 30 DAY OF PROTEST AGAINST THE PRIMARY ELECTIONS.”
