On Saturday, May 6th, a few days after we learned of the absurd sentence, when night fell, we walked towards the Justice Tribunal of Porto Alegre and we threw paint bombs at it.
By Sunday morning they had already hired somebody to clean it, leaving some traces of our action.
A week later, Saturday, May 13th, we went there again with the same intention and decorated the facade once more.
It matters little whether it is symbolic, if only a few people were working (judging by the lights that were on) those evenings and that they were startled when they heard the breaking noises at the door. What matters is that normality was broken, that these days and nights are not calm…that the sentences and the decisions that steals Rafael’s life and others like him, do not become the normal order of a society that for centuries has dominated the progress of others. That the normality of a society based on oppression, racism and imprisonment is broken. What matters is that we do not hesitate in deciding to take action and to retaliate and attack against what attacks us.
Why Rafael?
Rafael Braga Vieria, garbage collector and street dweller, was arrested on June 21st, 2013 in the context of the historic protests against the public transport fare increases. Charge: carrying an incendiary or explosive device. What he had in his hands were two plastic bottles, one containing bleach and the other pine-sol.
Several people were detained throughout 2013 for participating in these same protests, and were released some time later, some with a repentant attitude (to be expected in a place where this is rewarded). But Rafael Braga was not released. He was sentenced to 5 years of abduction in the cages of the State / capital-civilization. The message: The favela can not protest. Its alright for student activists, left-wing activists and especially whites, they can and will wait at home for their ‘due’ process, but the blacks, the poor and the favelados who attack the system…no! And Rafael was only where he lived, on the streets.
For several years there has been anarchic agitation for Rafael. Meetings, actions, bookfairs, an international call for Rafael in November 2016 and another in June 2017, to attacks against parts of the incarceration system: Banco Santander’s ATMs were torched in December 2013 signalling solidrity with Rafael Braga, in May 2014, the wild anti-authoritarian vandals also saluted him, torching the Military Tribunal and vehicles of the Military Police, and in September 2016 some friends of the revolt left an explosive device under a car, sending a hug to Rafael.
This agitation shows that in addition to ‘ideologies’, a person who falls into the cages of the enemy and remains dignified, will not be forgotten nor will they be alone, because the bonds built in struggle are firm, even when it is somebody who received punishment as a side effect of our actions for being part of the oppressed, as always: the poor and the Favelados. Those who do not have citizenship or rights.
Some joy came with the knowledge of his freedom under electronic monitoring in 2015 but this did not last for long. In January 2016 he was detained again, this time for trafficking of narcotics, with only enemies as witnesses: “In this sense, the statements made by the police officers Pablo Vinicius Cabral and Victor Hugo Lago, in their respective testimonials to fls. 195 and 220, who had served the arrest of the defendant RAFAEL BRAGA, statements which were corroborated by the testimony of his colleagues Farley Alves de Figueiredo (247) and Fernando Souza Pimentel (248).” – transcript of the sentence against Rafael Braga.
The message again was clear: “the more you mobilize to defend these people, the more severe our response.”
With one helping hand and the other armed
With a helping hand, solidarity is a torrent of actions that seek to make the life of the kidnapped less harsh in prison, certain acts that break up the isolation by sending letters, books, food, and economic help for the prisoner and their family who are forced to have to deal with attorney, lawsuits and sometimes even trips to visit someone.
But to make imprisonment less harsh does not solve or question this prison society. For there is not one single judge, lawyer or prison officer who has not been part of the abduction of some poor, Black, Favelado. There is not a single newspaper that does not teach us that this is ‘normal’. In all of them, blackness and poverty are transmitted as criminal proceedings. So there is no negotiation possible here. They have declared war on us. Cops, laws and prisons are all part of the machinery of domination. From the Capitão do Mato to the judicial system, the oppression has only changed names. The dominating civilization, the cradle of the state, capitalism and the morality of those who govern, calls for an attack, they spit in our face and crush us into the ground if we fall, demanding us to react.
That is why our hand is armed, for confrontation, agitation and retaliation. Because every attack against them is justified by centuries of domination, exploitation and extermination. Because every act of vandalism is justified by the commodification of our lives by the dominant culture, that old civilized, well-groomed, ultra-legalized and moralistic culture that marginalizes those who are not servants, who kill or kidnap those who do not lick the boss’s hand.
Because solidarity is a combative weapon that not only helps the comrade, but responds to those who beat them.

O Sábado 6 de maio, poucos dias depois de que ficamos sabendo da absurda sentença, quando a noite caia, caminhamos em direção do Tribunal de Justiça de Porto Alegre e atiramos contra ele bombas de tinta.
O domingo pela manhã já tinham contratado alguém para fazer a faxina do lugar deixando ainda rastros do fato.
Uma semana depois, o sábado 13 de maio, fomos ate lá com a mesma vontade e decoramos a fachada de novo.
Pouco importa se é simbólico, se só uns quantos estavam trabalhado (de luzes ligadas) aquelas noites e tomaram um susto ao ouvir vidros se quebrando na porta. O que importa é que sua normalidade seja quebrada, que seus dias e suas noites não sejam calmas… que suas sentenças e trabalhos que roubam a vida do Rafael e outros como ele, não fiquem como a ordem normal da sociedade que faz séculos domina uns pelo progresso de outros poucos. Que a normalidade de uma sociedade baseada na opressão, racismo e o encerro seja quebrada. O que importa é que não se perda a decisão em ação de revidar e atacar o que nos ataca.
Porque o Rafael?
Rafael Braga Vieira, catador de lixo e morador de rua, foi detido em 21 de junho de 2013 no contexto dos protestos históricos contra o aumento da passagem no Brasil. Acusação: porte de artefato incendiário ou explosivo. O que ele tinha nas mãos eram duas garrafas de plástico, uma de água sanitária e uma de pinho sol.
Várias pessoas foram detidas ao longo de 2013 por ter participado nesse mesmos protestos, e foram liberadas um tempo depois, alguns com uma vergonhosa atitude delatora (esperar o que num lugar onde a delação é premiada). Mas Rafael Braga não, ele não foi liberado. Ele foi sentenciado e condenado a 5 anos de seqüestro nas gaiolas do estado/capital-civilizador. A mensagem: A favela não pode protestar.
Tudo bem com estudantes, ativistas, e militantes da esquerda, e sobretudo brancos, eles podem e até vão esperar em casa seu “devido” processo, mas os negros, pobres e favelados atacar o sistema … não! E isso que Rafael apenas estava onde vivia, nas ruas.
Faz anos que existe uma agitação anarquica pelo Rafael. Desde reuniões, almoços, atividades, feiras, um chamado internacional pelo Rafael em novembro de 2016 e outro em junho de 2017, até ataques contra partes do sistema carcerário: Queimaram caixas eletrônicos do Banco Santander em dezembro de 2013 sinalizando a solidariedade com Rafael Braga, em maio de 2014, os vândalos selvagens antiautoritários solidarizam também com ele, queimando o tribunal militar da união e viaturas da PM, e em setembro do 2016 alguns amigxs da revolta deixaram um artefato incendiário embaixo de uma viatura mandando um abraço ao Rafael.
Esta agitação mostra que para alem das “ideologias”, uma pessoa que cai nas gaiolas do inimigo e se mantém digna, não será esquecida, não ficará só, porque os laços construídos na luta, são firmes ainda quando trata-se de alguém que recebe os castigos como efeito colateral de nossas ações por ser parte dos reprimidos de sempre: negros pobres e favelados. daqueles que não tem cidadania nem direitos.
Pequena alegria sentimos ao saber de sua liberdade vigiada em 2015, mas, pouco duraria. Em janeiro de 2016 ele foi detido novamente, esta vez por trafico de entorpecentes, unicamente com inimigos como testemunhas: “Neste sentido são valiosas as declarações prestadas pelos policiais militares Pablo Vinicius Cabral e Victor Hugo Lago, em seus respectivos depoimentos às fls. 195 e 220, que diligenciaram a prisão do réu RAFAEL BRAGA, declarações estas que foram corroboradas pelos testemunhos de seus colegas de farda Farley Alves de Figueiredo (fl. 247) e Fernando de Souza Pimentel (fl. 248).” Estrato da sentença contra Rafael Braga.
A mensagem de novo foi clara: ‘quanto mais vocês se mobilizarem para defender essas pessoas, mais dura será a nossa resposta’.
Com uma mão terna e a outra armada
Com uma mão terna, a solidariedade é um torrente de ações que procuram fazer a vida do seqüestrado menos dura na cadeia, são atos certeiros que quebram o isolamento mandando cartas, livros, comida, apoiando economicamente a ele e a sua família que se vê obrigada a ter que lidar com advogados, processos, as vezes até viagens para visitar alguém.
Mas, fazer menos pesada a cárcere não resolve nem questiona esta sociedade carcerária. Aqui não existe um só juiz, advogado ou agente penitenciário que não tenha sido parte do seqüestro de algum pobre, negro, favelado. Não existe um só jornal que não nos ensine que isto é “normal” em todos eles a negritude e a pobreza são transmitidas como criminais. Então, aqui não existe negociação possível. Declaram-nos a guerra. Policiais, leis e cárceres são parte da engrenagem da dominação. Desde o capitão do mato até o sistema judicial a opressão só tem mudado de nomes. A civilização dominadora, berço do estado, o capitalismo e a moral dos que governam, chama a gritos um ataque, provoca, cuspe no rosto e esmaga no chão se caírmos, nos demandando reagir.
Por isso a nossa mão armada, a do confronto, do agito, do revide. Porquecada ataque contra eles está justificado por séculos de dominação, exploração e extermínio. Porque cada ato vandálico está justificado pela ostentação da mercadoria e da cultura dominante, aquela velha civilizada, bem penteada, ultra legalizada e moralista cultura do domínio que marginaliza a quem não é serviçal, que mata ou seqüestra a aqueles que não lambem a mão do patrão.
Porque a solidariedade é uma arma de combate que não só ajuda ao companheiro, mas responde a quem nele bate.
