At 01:00AM on January 14th, 2018 at the intersection of Fuenzalida and San Agustín streets, anonymous attackers detonated an incendiary device at the main entrance of the San Agustin de Melipilla Church. After a fire started at the door of the religious temple, bystanders alerted firefighters who prevented it from spreading.
The police quickly arrived at the scene but were unable to make any arrests.
The incendiary action was claimed by means of graffiti left at the entrance of the church that read:
“The only church that illuminates is the one that burns, it is the one that is on fire. No to the Pope”.
The San Agustin de Melipilla Church was being used for administrative work and had been closed to the general public while repairs took place after it was named as a National Monument, which did not prevent the fire from igniting its entrance.
The attack occurred despite threats by the State to strengthen security ahead of the Pope’s arrival in Chile. The incendiary action in Melipilla comes not long after the series of explosive and incendiary attacks against churches that took place during the dawn of January 12, 2018.
For his part, the mayor of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego stated, “Nobody is forced to agree with the Pope’s visit, but the use of violence has no place in a democracy”.
