Anarchist & Libertarian Alliance Call for a General Strike in #Catalonia on October 3

Anarcho-syndicalists are not just background actors. We must combine our strategies and not depend on the siren songs of the conflicts organized by others.

As libertarians and active part of the trade unions, popular and social movements of Catalonia, we will always defend the right of self-determination of the people – starting with ours.

We see it as a basic principle of confederalism, to enable human coexistence on an equal basis. We are clear that any full emancipation will be impossible without first eliminating the economic structure that underpins capitalism. As long as this does’nt happen, the living conditions of the working class will continue to be crushed by a Spanish and Catalan oligarchy who always go out in full force to impose labor counter-reforms and cuts in social rights.

CNT on General Strike in Catalonia

Several Anarchist groups and unions, but also student unions and initiatives are calling for a general strike in Catalonia on October 3. The number of people and groups calling for a general strike is growing after todays violence by Spanish cops. We publish a statement by CNT Catalunya – Balears.

After meetings held with the other unions, the Catalan regional CNT has decided to join the strike for this coming October 3rd.

At CNT we fully support the reasons for this strike: the continuing loss of rights for the working class, together with the concerning situation that Catalan workers are experiencing as they perform their jobs by the actions of the different bodies and repressive organs of the State.

CNT condemns this interference and defends the right of the people of Catalonia to be able to express themselves freely on any matter that concerns them, including, of course, self-determination.

The CNT is calling for solidarity with the Catalan working class, which is experiencing a double oppression, economic and military. This situation of militarisation and repression completely transcends the Catalan political situation and sets a very serious precedent in the central government’s responses to social struggles: to claim that safeguarding “the rule of law” should allow them to trample on our essential rights and freedoms.

We understand that the unknown measures of repression that the central government is deploying are not a real response, albeit typical of the heirs of the Franco dictatorship, to the “sovereign Catalan challenge.” The creation of a war scenario with huge doses of propaganda, patriotic exaltation and fear of the other can only give rise to irreconcilable sides: “With them” or “with us.” They know it and it is what they are looking for. This social recapitalisation on both sides of the front line has been kept up the sleeve of the two major party bastions of an unjust and corrupt system. Parties that did nothing saw their hegemony jeopardised by internal corruption and developed policies.

The CNT is standing up. Not against the Spanish attack or against the Catalan people, but together with our Catalan brothers and sisters to defend rights and freedoms that are for everyone. The CNT stands to face the violence of the real enemy, a regime that is killing us wherever we live.

Compañeras and compañeros, the CNT de Catalunya i Balears calls us to extend the mobilisation throughout the country. It is our duty to make it possible.

CGT condemns the repression of the Spanish State to the Catalan people for wanting to exercise the right to vote.

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT), already before the repressive actions carried out by the Spanish government in Catalonia on this first day of October, stated in a communiqué that it will defend the rights and freedoms of all people in any place with the means available to them.

The events we are seeing in Catalan towns and cities since the early morning hours, are typical for a dictatorship. The brutal, totally disproportionate attacks by the forces and bodies of repression against a defenseless population that only wants to exercise the right to vote, once again demonstrate the dictatorial state in which citizens have been plunged for years and is endangering the coexistence, fundamental rights and basic freedoms of all people.

The CGT expresses its absolute rejection of these actions and expresses its support and solidarity with the people of Catalonia because nothing justifies the excessive aggression of a peaceful population that defends itself with ballot papers and ballots, regardless of the position that one may have on the independence of this territory.
