[16 April 2003] Anarchists in Greece riot during an anti-war protest towards the American Embassy in Athens, against the invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003, through the launch of a “shock and awe” bombing campaign led by a United States-led coalition (USA, Britain, Australia, Spain and Poland) on the excuse -which was later proved fabricated- that Iraq was in possession of “Weapons of Mass Destruction” (WMDs).

During the protest on the day of the Treaty of Accession of new EU member states that was taking place at the same time in Athens during the greek EU presidency accepting in the EU 10 new countries, 84 arrests were made, 4 were charged with felonies and 80 for misdemeanor offences.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of civilians died a violent death just in the first three years of the war that ensued from coalition, insurgent military action, sectarian and criminal violence, directly or indirectly procured by the invasion.
