Athens: Anarchists intervene at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
On Tuesday 10 December 2019 more than 70 anarchists sent their own message during the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony of Athens in solidarity to squats. The intervention comes few days after the end of a 15 days ultimatum issued by the Ministry of “Public Order” towards the dozens of political and refugee squats across Greece (some of them more than 30 years old) threatening them with violent evictions by the riot police and police special forces, if they did not evacuate within the deadline. The deadline ended on Thursday night on the 5th of December 2019, a political decision by the greek State aiming to agitate and create an “explosive atmosphere”.
As it happens no squats or self organized spaces in Greece have accepted the police ultimatum. Instead, we have witnessed moves like the one depicted in the video, where anarchists during the beginning of the Christmas festivities in Athens with the lighting tree ceremony in Syntagma square in front of the Greek parliament they managed to disrupt the mayor’s speech shouting slogans in solidarity to Squats and to sabotage the side fountains of Syntagma Square with washing powder.
The slogan shouted in the video:
“Ten, a hundred, thousands of squats against a world of organized decay”
