On Monday, May 22, interrupting the citizen normality of barrio Matta, we gathered with our compañerxs to remember Mauricio Morales, el Punky Mauri. We met on the same street where the compañero died that morning in May 2009, when the bomb he was carrying to the school for prison guards prematurely exploded.

We wanted to fill that space of death with black life, that space from where the Power and it’s tireless lackeys paraded the body of Mauri, seeking to spread terror and defeat using the familiar choreography of the police and the media.

8 years have passed and Mauri enjoys excellent health within the blackest hearts, the fact that the majority of compañerxs who were present never knew him is testament to the validity of his ideas / practices and a concrete embodiment of the fruit of memory that has materialized in diverse forms over the years: posters, songs, banners, murals, stickers, actions, barricades, books and everything else that has contributed to collectivizing the ideas of somebody who self-identified as an ‘anarchist apprentice’.

The place was filled with anarchic propaganda, the music that he loved so much, shared moments lived full of laughter, mistakes and lessons; compañerxs also read his writings from the other side of the wall, all in front of the police presence watching from a distance, expecting our actions, while the prison guard’s school was heavily guarded by armoured vehicles.

We left the place together as a group and when we arrived at Matta Avenue, outside the Fire Department station, its members began to insult and attack us while simultaneously urging the police to come and get us (which they soon did). The firefighters beat up and detained several compañerxs so they could be handed over to the police, fulfilling the historical role of oppressors while attempting to portray themselves as some kind of victims.

Something worth emphasizing is that the four arrested compañerxs did not give in to defeatism or resignation and kept fighting right to the end, even though they were outnumbered they refused to surrender. By the next morning they were all back on the street.

Standing together in solidarity with all those who continue to ignite the fuse of black memory.

Ensuring that Anarchy lives
Mauricio Morales Presente!
