As preparations are underway for massive demonstrations shortly before the start of the G20 Summit in the German city of Hamburg, German police have already introduced a G20 prison.

From the 2nd of July onwards many autonomous, anti-capitalist and ecologist movements are expected to attend demonstrations, and their number is expected to reach at least 150 thousand. The separate prison built up specially for the G20 meeting indicates how the German police are preparing to meet the demonstrators.

Against the G20 Summit many leftist autonomous groups will launch demonstrations with the motto: “Welcome to the hell of G20 Summit”. The German police took this occasion to build a prison on an eleven thousand square meters field, which covers an old marketplace, making room for 400 persons to be kept in temporary custody.

According to the German media, 70 group-cells and 50 solitary cells are awaiting G20 protestors. Germany is said to have paid for this transitional prison an amount of at least 3 million Euro, but the actual expenses are reported to be far higher.

The G20 Summit, to which the European Union and 19 countries that represent 85% of the world economy are member, will take place in the city of Hamburg.

2007’s G8 Summit held in the German town of Heiligendamm also witnessed violent crackdown by the German police against demonstrators, one among whom lost an eye due to direct subjecture to pressure water used by the police to disperse the crowd.
